Then a great sadness came over me as I could almost feel the fear, the anguish and the hopelessness when these soldiers knew they were not going to escape their fate. So many poor uneducated refugees from the Civil War with nowhere else to earn their keep other than the army. Most were just young farm boys who were derelicts of the times. Then I wondered how the Native Americans felt as they were hunted down and were systematically driven from their historic lands. It all made me sad. I noticed Hanna trying to discreetly wipe her eyes.
